King Sejong and Nam June Paik:
Two People Who Met Across 500 Years
Chung Jingwon, Curator of the 1st Sejong Hangeul Biennale 2027
The Hangeul Culture Special Exhibition King Sejong and Nam June Paik begins with the meeting of two human beings. Rather than simply viewing King Sejong and Nam June Paik as a king and an artist separated by 500 years, we planned the exhibition to bring visitors face to face with two people who, each in their own era, wrestled with how people could communicate better with one another. The exhibition title is itself a device that expresses this intention. Setting aside the labels of king and artist for a moment, it lets us meet two people who, though they lived in different times, held the same questions. What we deliberated over longest in preparing the exhibition was the "encounter." Before asking what to show, we thought first about how the two should meet so that visitors could understand them within a single context.
This thinking carries through to the layout of the entire exhibition space. The exhibition consists of three galleries. We recommend viewing them in order, but you can move through them in any order and still understand the exhibition, because what matters is the experience created within them, more than the route. Each time you move to a new gallery, the way you meet the two figures changes, and you come to see the same theme from a different angle. People take in the same story differently depending on the space they are in. That is why, rather than dividing the works into categories, this exhibition arranges its space so that visitors can experience a single question in several ways. In this way, the lives of two people who lived in different eras connect naturally into one story.
The core of this exhibition does not lie in any single work. It lies in showing the moment when King Sejong and Nam June Paik meet through each other's work and thought. Throughout the exhibition, the two meet anew, not as a king of the past and a modern artist, but as two people who shared the same concerns. Most visitors look for the signature works first. In this exhibition, however, we hope you will start with the question "Why were these two placed together?" rather than "Which is the most famous work?" That question will carry you through to the end of the exhibition.
That encounter is most vividly revealed in Nam June Paik's King Sejong (1998). The robot, built from televisions and radios, resembles neither the face nor the dress of King Sejong. Without knowing the title, one cannot easily tell who the figure is. Yet that very strangeness is where the work begins. Instead of representing King Sejong himself, Paik gives form, in the language of his own medium, to the way King Sejong brought about change.
King Sejong systematized speech and sound into a writing system, a set of visual symbols that anyone can learn and use to record. The vowels of Hunminjeongeum were created based on the principles of heaven, earth, and humanity (cheon-ji-in), while the consonants were modeled on the shapes of the speech organs. Nam June Paik, likewise, continued to work at turning invisible electronic signals into images and sounds that people can experience. The televisions in the work are a new body that expresses King Sejong, and at the same time they are Paik's way of reading him. Notably, at the head is the triangle (gak, 角, △), which stands for humanity among the wonbanggak (圓方角: circle, square, triangle), Korea's traditional cosmology of heaven, earth, and humanity. This becomes the clue that reveals the figure as King Sejong, who always thought of his people. In this way, Paik reinterprets how King Sejong changed the world in his own language. Standing before this work, we suggest you first ask "Why did it have to be a television?" rather than "How much does it look like King Sejong?" At that moment, the work becomes another language for understanding King Sejong.
The reason King Sejong and Nam June Paik feel as though they meet within a single context, despite being separated by roughly 500 years, is that both changed the lives of countless people through a new visual language. King Sejong began from his care for his people, and Nam June Paik from a critical awareness of the limits of communication in his day, yet both were "innovators" who changed their times. The changes they created made us who we are today. Hunminjeongeum laid the foundation for us to build a culture of our own, and Paik's media art showed that moving images could connect our sensibilities with the world. Both translated what could not be seen into forms that anyone can experience. Korean culture has now become a culture the world enjoys. This is an age in which we communicate with the world on the basis of our own culture, and these two figures, each from their own place, opened the way to it first.
This special exhibition is both a complete exhibition in itself and a beginning. Organized ahead of the 2027 Sejong Hangeul Biennale, it was planned to create a place to experience contemporary art in Sejong City, which does not yet have an art museum, and to leave that experience behind as a memory. Even when people see the same exhibition, the scenes they remember longest differ from person to person. If visitors go home with even a single scene or a single question, I believe the exhibition will have been meaningful enough. Just as King Sejong opened a way to communicate with the world through letters, and Nam June Paik through moving images, Sejong City now intends to carry that question forward on the stage of the Sejong Hangeul Biennale. Just as the two met across 500 years, Hangeul will become another medium linking Sejong City and the world. |

Beyond the Exhibition: Another Way to Enjoy Hangeul
Lim Jina, Team Manager of the Hangeul Culture City Planning Team
What remains with visitors after they finish viewing an exhibition?
It might be the image of a striking artwork, a single sentence encountered in the exhibition hall, or a new thought. I believe a good exhibition doesn't end within the gallery walls; it leaves behind questions and memories that carry over into visitors' everyday lives.
We grappled with the same question while preparing the third Hangeul Culture Special Exhibition, King Sejong and Nam June Paik. Once visitors have encountered the stories of how King Sejong and Nam June Paik communicated with the world in innovative ways, how can that experience continue? What is the best way not only to see and understand Hangeul, but to meet it firsthand and remember it for a long time?
With these questions in mind, we have prepared a variety of programs to accompany the exhibition: weekend educational programs, a stamp-collecting activity that invites you to explore the three exhibition halls slowly, and the "Hangeul Citizen Artists" education program that brings Hangeul into everyday life. They are all different programs, but they share a single idea.
Now it is time to meet Hangeul up close, with both body and mind.
Autumn: Breathing New Life Under Clear Skies On weekends, step outside to the outdoor space beyond the exhibition hall. Against a backdrop of clear skies and a green park, we have prepared an educational program that breathes new life into broken toys. A toy that is broken and no longer serves its purpose can be reborn in a new form when seen from a slightly different angle. The process involves dismantling and taking apart toys, combining familiar shapes in new ways, adding imagination, and giving them a new use.
This process resembles the creative spirit of King Sejong and Nam June Paik. Just as the two figures found new possibilities within the familiar and recreated them in their own way, children can look at broken toys with fresh eyes and find their own answers.
Perhaps the process of thinking differently matters more than making something well. Through this small activity of finding a new use for a broken toy, children can experience the joy of "seeing things anew.“
A Way to Slowly Explore the Three Exhibition Halls This time, take a slower look inside the exhibition hall. King Sejong and Nam June Paik is divided into Buildings 1 through 3, and each hall features different artworks and stories. Rather than skimming through everything at once, we encourage you to examine each space closely, think about the connections between the artworks, and experience the exhibition in depth.
To help with this, we have prepared the small pleasure of collecting a stamp in each of the three halls.
More than a simple stamp-collecting event, it is meant as a chance not to pass by a single hall, to look at one more artwork, and to remember each space slowly. These three stamps will become a small record of the time you spent discovering the exhibition as you walked through it.
Bringing Hangeul into Everyday Life Once you have fully enjoyed the exhibition, shall we bring Hangeul into our daily lives? Hangeul is more than a script we read and write; we encounter it in many forms all around us. Sometimes it appears as striking design, and at other times as performance or education. At the multipurpose cultural space Hangeul Sangjeom (Hangeul Store), Hangeul Citizen Artists from across Sejong City will gather to offer Hangeul arts and culture education programs for you.
Hangeul Citizen Artists are Sejong residents who are also artists, and they have led Hangeul arts education since 2025. While last year's programs were for young children and institutions, this year, marking the 100th anniversary of Hangeul Day, we are running programs for Sejong residents from October through November.
Shall we meet Hangeul firsthand by joining the programs our citizen artists have thoughtfully prepared? You may enjoy them so much that you'll want to visit Hangeul Sangjeom every day. You can browse a variety of Hangeul-themed products and Hangeul snacks, and if you want to rest for a moment, you might leaf through a book in the reading area and find yourself completely captivated by the charm of Hangeul.
Because There Is More Than One Way to Meet Hangeul The word we thought about most while preparing these programs was "connection." Viewing artworks in the exhibition hall, walking through the galleries, adding new possibilities outdoors, and seeing Hangeul anew in everyday life alongside the Hangeul Citizen Artists.
When these different experiences connect, we believe the exhibition can go beyond a single moment of viewing artworks and become a time to meet Hangeul through many senses. Precisely because Hangeul is a script we read and write every day, we may have had few chances to look at it anew. This autumn, we hope you will meet the familiar Hangeul from a slightly different perspective through King Sejong and Nam June Paik.
We hope the small discovery that begins in the exhibition hall becomes a stepping stone for looking at Hangeul anew in your daily life as well.

Interview with Park Younggoog, CEO of the Sejong Culture and Tourism Foundation
Q1. Welcome, Mr. President. Could you please say a few words to our subscribers?
Hello. I am Park Young-guk, President of the Sejong City Foundation for Culture and Tourism. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who, despite your busy lives, follow Sejong's arts and culture and offer such warm support to the Foundation's work.
Q2. The Foundation has filled every corner of Sejong with culture through a wide range of projects. Among so many moments, which one remains most vivid in your memory?
It is difficult to choose just one, because each moment has carried its own meaning and left its own deep impression.
If I must name the most vivid, it would be the 2025 Hangeul International Pre-Biennale. It was the moment our effort to change the face of Jochiwon through culture finally took shape before our eyes.
Our hope was clear. We wanted to overturn the notion that Sejong is a dull city, and above all to awaken Jochiwon's potential and change the character of the city. Just as Seongsu-dong and Mullae-dong in Seoul grew into celebrated cultural hotspots, Jochiwon offers the same possibilities. It is as accessible as Seoul's Line 2, which links the capital's major districts, and it is a place where a long history meets new culture. Local creators had begun to take root there, and I believed that if we could establish some twenty cultural anchors, the city would be transformed.
Spaces of very different character, such as the Jochiwon 1927 Art Center, the Sanil Silk Reeling Factory area, stood apart and yet together. For the Pre-Biennale, we strung these spaces and their stories together like beads on a single thread. I still cannot forget the day Mr Doodle HANGOODLE brought new energy to those spaces. Places that had been still came to life, and the whole city became one great museum.
Our goal is not a one-time event. We intend to build on these first steps and establish Jochiwon as a lasting cultural district. The moment that opened this change remains the most rewarding and deeply moving memory for me.
Q3. What led you to host a biennale in Sejong, the City of Hangeul Culture? What values do you hope to convey about Hangeul through art?
It all began with a serious question: how could Sejong develop an original, distinctive identity under the banner of the City of Hangeul Culture? After listening to many voices in the field and thinking it through together, we concluded that we should present Hangeul's boundless potential to the world through the language of art.
We tend to think of Hangeul simply as letters and text that we read and write in books. I believe, however, that Hangeul is a remarkable visual art in its own right, with endless possibilities for dialogue with contemporary art. I wanted to show how its formal beauty and philosophical depth can grow into an artistic vocabulary.
Sejong's urban character was also an important backdrop. The city does not yet have large traditional museums or exhibition halls. Paradoxically, that means the entire city can become an exhibition space. By turning aging urban regeneration sites scattered across the city into biennale venues, we hoped to weave Sejong into a single cultural landscape.
A biennale is more than an art exhibition to be viewed. By transforming the city's scenery through art, it can move beyond the unfamiliarity and uniformity that a newly built city often has, and become an important opportunity to build identity and vitality. Changing the city's atmosphere through Hangeul and creating a true City of Hangeul Culture, where art becomes part of daily life, is why we took on the biennale.
Q4. Sejong and Hangeul are inseparable keywords. What do you consider most important for Sejong to firmly establish its identity as the City of Hangeul Culture?
I believe Sejong and Hangeul are the most important assets we have when we speak about our city. Sejong recognized Hangeul early as a vital cultural asset and has steadily built it into the identity of a City of Hangeul Culture. Many other cities have tried to make use of Hangeul, but because our city bears the name Sejong itself, our connection to Hangeul carries a symbolic clarity that no other can match.
Global examples are instructive. The small English town of Stratford-upon-Avon built its cultural brand on being Shakespeare's birthplace, and Stratford in Ontario, Canada, borrowed that name to create a successful theater festival. Sejong, too, has a rare persuasive strength in linking Hangeul to the city, thanks to the historical weight and meaning in its name.
Looking back, when we first spoke of a City of Hangeul Culture in Sejong, there were skeptical glances. Today the phrase is no longer unfamiliar to citizens, and it has become an identity people naturally associate with Sejong. Now is the time to build on that effort and root this identity more deeply in citizens' daily lives and in every part of the city.
Above all, this depends on civic pride. Citizens should be able to accept, naturally and proudly, that their city is named Sejong and that they live in a City of Hangeul Culture. When that awareness becomes part of everyday culture and reaches visitors as the city's distinctive charm, the identity of our City of Hangeul Culture will grow stronger.
Through spaces, art and content, the Foundation will keep laying the groundwork so that Hangeul can permeate Sejong's daily life and urban scenery. Creating Sejong's own story through Hangeul, and shaping a city where residents and visitors can experience that story together, is what we must do going forward.
Q5. Spaces such as the Hangeul Playground and Hangeul Sangjeom seem to go beyond facilities and serve as core infrastructure that shapes the city's identity. Why did you plan urban spaces built around Hangeul?
Spaces like the Hangeul Playground and Hangeul Sangjeom (Hangeul Store) mean far more than physical facilities where people stop for a while. They are an essential cultural foundation that lets citizens encounter and experience the identity of a City of Hangeul Culture up close.
Physical infrastructure can be built if there is a budget, but cultural assets that truly express the identity of the people who live in a city cannot be created overnight. That is why we planned and created these spaces. We hoped that, through Hangeul, citizens would come across culture of real depth in their everyday lives, and that those experiences and memories would ripen into Sejong's own culture and stories.
These spaces and programs are modest for now. But I firmly believe that as the encounters and stories we share today deepen over time, they will become the most precious cultural heritage Sejong can proudly pass on to the next generation. Shaping a city's appeal begins with citizens meeting Hangeul close to home and discovering what is special about the place where they live.
Q6. From the Hangeul cultural spaces built so far to the City of Hangeul Culture still to come, Sejong is gradually creating a new cultural landscape. How would you like Sejong to be remembered, and what would you like to say to citizens and subscribers?
I hope Sejong will be remembered as more than a city famous for Hangeul. I want it to be a city whose appearance and atmosphere have been changed by Hangeul, and one that people visit to experience that culture. Hangeul should not stay within exhibition halls and events. It should connect streets, spaces, people and stories, and become a sight and an experience found only in Sejong. If the Hangeul cultural spaces and projects we are building now connect and grow, I am confident Sejong can become a new destination for cultural tourism.
In the end, a city's charm comes not from a single facility or event but from the stories and scenery that exist only there. I hope visitors will encounter Hangeul, discover spaces throughout the city, and leave with memories that make them want to return. I also hope citizens will be able to say, naturally, "Our city has a culture all its own." That is the City of Hangeul Culture we hope to build.
